Documentary Collections

A payment structure where banks coordinate the exchange of shipping documents against payment or acceptance, offering a cost-effective alternative to letters of credit.

Understanding Documentary Collections

Documentary collections are a trade finance method where banks act as facilitators to exchange documents (invoices, bills of lading, insurance certificates) for payment or acceptance. Unlike letters of credit, banks do not guarantee payment; they simply coordinate the document exchange.

Collections are less expensive than LCs but carry higher payment risk, making them suitable for transactions between trusted partners or for lower-value shipments.

Governed by the ICC's Uniform Rules for Collections (URC 522), collections provide standardized procedures across international transactions.

Key Collection Structures

D/P Structure

Documents Against Payment: Documents released only when buyer pays, providing immediate liquidity to seller.

D/A Structure

Documents Against Acceptance: Documents released upon buyer's acceptance of time draft, extending seller credit.

Risk Considerations

Unlike LCs, banks do not guarantee payment. Collections rely on buyer integrity and payment discipline.

Collection Process Flow

1

Agreement

Buyer and seller agree to collection terms (D/P or D/A)

2

Shipment

Seller ships goods and prepares required documents

3

Instruction

Seller sends documents to exporting bank with collection instructions

4

Transmission

Exporting bank forwards documents to importing bank

5

Presentation

Importing bank presents documents to buyer for payment/acceptance

6

Documents released upon payment (D/P) or acceptance (D/A)
